PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's freshman infielder David Valesente was selected as the Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week it was announced on Monday afternoon. It is the second time that a Hawk baseball player has earned Rookie of the Week honors, as pitcher Mark Dolaghan earned the award on February 12. Valesente shares this week's honor with pitcher Bryan Hamilton of Charlotte.
Valesente earned the award on the back of his 7-for-13 (.538) performance at the plate in three games against Saint Louis. In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, Valesente had three hits and scored a run. In the nightcap, he added two more hits and drove in a run. On Sunday, he had two hits and two RBIs. His single in the third inning gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead, and his seventh-inning single drove in what turned out to be the winning run in a 3-2 SJU victory.
The Hawks will travel to Rider on Tuesday for their final road game of the year. They will close out the 2007 season with home series against Richmond (May 11-13) and Rhode Island (May 17-19).
