The Saint Joseph’s men’s basketball team will hold “HawkAID,” a public intra-squad scrimmage, on Saturday, October 28, at 3:00 p.m. in Hagan Arena. Admission is $5 at the door, with all proceeds benefitting hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico. Doors open at 2:45 p.m.

The scrimmage will consist of four 10-minute quarters (no halftime), with Crimson and Gray squads led by SJU assistant coaches. Head coach Phil Martelli will instruct in real-time and be equipped with a wireless microphone to be heard over the arena sound system.

“This is what we do and this is who we are,” Martelli said. “At this time of year it’s about practicing and coaching. Inviting our students and fans is our way of including the larger Saint Joseph’s community and supporting relief efforts already in place."

Hawk guard Christian Vega, a native of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, will address the crowd after the scrimmage. Vega and other SJU students continue to raise funds and awareness for ongoing relief efforts on the island.

“What our students do is extraordinary,” said Martelli. “Christian’s family is safe, but there is destruction all around them. We just want to do our part to support them and let Christian know we have his back.”

Auction items and raffle prizes — including tickets to upcoming Big 5 games, SJU Bookstore gift certificates, team bus rides and seats on the bench — will take place in between quarters. Following the scrimmage, Martelli will lead a Q&A session and team members will be available for photographs.

The Hawks open the regular season Nov. 11 at Toledo. Saint Joseph’s home opener is Nov. 18 at Hagan Arena vs. Princeton. A limited number of full season tickets remain, with partial plans and single game tickets currently on sale via the new website. PURCHASE TICKETS
