Matt Mobley had 31 points and 10 rebounds as St. Bonaventure held off Saint Joseph’s, 83-77, in Atlantic 10 action at Hagan Arena.

Mobley made 4-of-9 three-point attempts and was 13-for-14 from the foul line for St. Bonaventure (17-10; 9-6 A-10).

James Demery led five Saint Joseph’s (10-17; 3-12) scorers in double figures with 21 points while Charlie Brown had 12 points. Chris Clover had 11 points as did Brendan Casper, all in the first half on 5-for-6 shooting, while Markell Lodge scored 10 points and had a career-high four blocks.

The game was tight early in the second half, with SJU holding its last lead of the game, 51-50, with 13:49 to play. St. Bonaventure went up 59-55, but after an offensive foul call on the Hawks, Saint Joseph’s head coach Phil Martelli received consecutive technical fouls and was ejected from the game at 9:02. Mobley connected on four straight free throws to give the Bonnies a 63-55 lead.

St. Bonaventure increased that lead to 72-62 with 4:32 to play, but the Hawks stayed within striking distance, as a layup by Demery pulled SJU within 76-70 at 1:21. With SJU forced to foul, the Bonnies took advantage and made 7-of-8 from the foul line in the final 37 seconds to ice the win.

In the first half, Saint Joseph’s used an 8-0 run to take its biggest lead of the half, 15-7, but St. Bonaventure answered with a 14-5 run, as Mobley scored seven points, to regain the lead, 21-20. The Bonnies built the lead up to their biggest of the half, 38-29, but Casper scored seven straight points to close the Hawks’ gap to 40-36 at halftime.

The Hawks shot just 3-of-18 from three-point range while the Bonnies made 7-of-18.

"Turnovers and foul shooting . . . And they're skill plays. Flat out skill plays," said Martelli. "They have a brilliant offensive scheme. They get [Mobley] a lot of shots."

"We wanted pace, that way our skills don't get exposed. Our turnovers came when we went in the half court and tried to grind, and that's not going to be good for us. We tried to play down the floor, and we're going to continue to do that over the next two weeks," Martelli said.

Jaylen Adams had 17 points and nine assists for St. Bonaventure with Denzel Gregg chipping in 12 and David Andoh scoring 11 points.

Saint Joseph’s heads to Saint Louis on Saturday for a nationally-televised game on the NBC Sports Network at 4:30 p.m. Eastern.
