PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph's fought back from a 14-point halftime deficit but couldn't overcome Richmond, falling 70-66 in Atlantic 10 action at Hagan Arena.

Lamarr Kimble led Saint Joseph’s (8-8; 2-3) in scoring with 17 points while freshman Nick Robinson recorded season-highs of 14 points and eight rebounds. Charlie Brown tallied 13 points, all coming in the second half.

ShawnDre’ Jones scored 21 points and T.J. Cline had 15 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists for the Spiders, who improved to 11-6 and 5-0 in the A-10.

Saint Joseph’s trailed 41-28 at the half, and by 18 points early in the second, to close to within 65-64 with 1:52 to play. But Hawks came up empty on the next two possessions and Jones hit a pair of free throws with 28 seconds left to put the Spiders up 67-64.

After the Hawks failed to score on the next possession, Julius Johnson converted two more free throws for Richmond, but Chris Clover scored on a layup at :04 to pull SJU within, 69-66. With Clover intentionally missing the ensuing free throw, SJU couldn’t control the rebound and Richmond got the ball back, as Khwan Fore provided the final margin with a free throw at :02.

Saint Joseph’s led early on, 14-10, as Kimble scored eight for the Hawks, but that would be SJU’s biggest lead of the half. After Richmond tied the game, 19-19, the Spiders took a 26-20 lead on a three-pointer by Buckingham with 4:57 to play. The Hawks closed to 29-28 on a jumper by Demery before Richmond closed out the half with a 12-0 run, on threes by  to take a 41-28 lead at the break.

"We lost attention defensively. We had to deal with [T.J.] Cline, who is a magnificent player. He's the early Player of the Year in the league," said SJU coach Phil Martelli of the Richmond run.

Brown scored eight points in the first six minutes of the second half to help SJU cut the deficit to 48-40. Kimble hit a jumper to bring SJU within 48-42 and then a three-pointer by Nick Robinson at 12:23 cut the Richmond lead to 51-47.

Jumpers by Fore and Buckingham helped the Spiders increase their margin to nine, 63-54, but the Hawks went on a 7-0 run, ending in a dunk by Javon Baumann to cut the deficit to 63-61 at 3:15. Jones added another basket for Richmond, but Robinson converted three of four free throws to pull SJU within, 65-64.

The Hawks were hurt by 17 turnovers in the game and a 23.5 percent three-point shooting effort.

"You see the 17 turnovers and most of them were in the halfcourt. Then there were the back cuts. We don't overplay, so we shouldn't get back-cut," said Martelli. "We had two guys with 11 turnovers. It must be bad positioning. I have to look at it and figure it out."

"They didn't hear from me that they did a good job. I don't listen to it. I don't buy it. There are things that we can take out of that (comeback), but only if we're better on Monday. Seventeen turnovers. There's nothing about 'Nice effort.'"

Saint Joseph’s will look to snap a two-game losing streak when it goes on the road to Massachusetts on Wednesday.
