PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer squad (3-7-4, 1-2-1 A-10) stays in the city to face La Salle (5-8-1, 1-4-0 A-10) this Wednesday, October 18. Kickoff at McCarthy Stadium in Philadelphia is slated for 7:00 p.m. The Hawks, predicted to finish 12th this season, sit ninth in the league standings with four points while the Explorers are tied for 10th with three points.
Wednesday’s match will mark the 60th all-time meeting between Saint Joseph’s and La Salle. The Explorers own a 27-22-10 all-time series advantage and have won the last seven meetings. SJU’s last win came in the form of a 1-0 victory on November 7, 2008.
The Hawks are coming in off of a 1-0 loss at Fordham on Saturday evening; the Rams scored in the 25th minute and senior goalkeeper Greg O'Connell made six saves in the full 90:00.
Paced by a league-best 3.43 shots per match, senior midfielder Matt Crawford has scored six of SJU's 14 goals this season, but 13 different Hawks own at least one point. O'Connell (3-7-3, 1-2-1 A-10) owns a 1.37 goals against average and an .800 save percentage with a league-best 5.54 saves per match and 72 total saves in 1184:03. Junior defender Eddie McCusker (1,349 minutes), freshman defender Daniel Morales (1,333), Crawford (1,287), and freshman midfielder Ritchie Barry (1,254) are the only four Hawks to have started all 14 matches and lead SJU in minutes played.
La Salle opened its season with four consecutive losses to Loyola (Md.) (5-4 OT), DePaul (2-1), Loyola (Ill.) (3-1), and Rider (2-1) before picking up four consecutive wins over Saint Peter's (2-0), Lafayette (2-1), Penn (3-0), and Hartwick (2-1). After drawing with LIU Brooklyn (1-1), the Explorers dropped their first three league matches to Duquesne (3-1), Fordham (1-0), and Rhode Island (1-0) before earning a 5-3 league win over George Washington on October 11. La Salle enters Saturday's match coming off of a 2-0 loss at UMass on Saturday.
Matt Robinson leads the squad in points (17) and goals (7), with three of those scores coming in the form of a hat trick at George Washington last week, while he and Mathias Patino tie for the team's lead in assists with three. Mark Tobin (5-5-1, 1-4-0 A-10) owns a 1.32 goals against average and .737 save percentage in 1023:54 and has seen every minute of league play.
La Salle went 10-8-1 overall and 5-3-0 in the A-10 last fall. The Explorers fell to Rhode Island, 3-1, in the 2016 A-10 Championship quarterfinals.
