WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – A late offensive outburst by Yale sent the Saint Joseph’s baseball team to a 13-9 loss at Plumeri Park on Saturday afternoon.  Marc Giacalone and Kadar Namey each tallied three hits and a pair of runs batted in on the day for SJU.

For the second time in three games, Saint Joseph’s (1-11) got the offense going early with a four-run second inning. Namey led off the inning with a single, and two batters later, Matt Cuppari hit his first collegiate home run to left to give the Hawks an early lead.

Then, with two outs, a Matt Maul single and a Peter Sitaras walk brought Giacalone to the plate, and his single to right, coupled with an error, allowed both Maul and Sitaras to score and double the advantage.

Yale (3-3) got two back in the bottom of the frame as a one-out double by Griffin Dey and a pair of errors plated two runs to cut the margin in half.  Dey then drove in a run of his own with a two-out single in the third to score Simon Whiteman and make it a 4-3 game.

Deon Stafford, Jr., then hit an opposite field home run for his first long ball of the year to restore the two-run cushion in the top of the fifth.

The Bulldogs went ahead in the sixth, scoring four runs on two hits and five walks.  After a pair of free passes started the inning, Dai Dai Otaka singled in Alec Hoeschel to bring Yale within one.  Tim DeGraw then followed with a bunt single to score Derek Brown and tie the game.

Another walk then loaded the bases before Matt Pennell came on and issued a walk to Richard Slenker that gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the day.  Two batters later, Dey notched his second RBI of the afternoon with the fifth walk of the inning to make it a 7-5 game.

Maul reached on an error to lead off the seventh for the Hawks and Giacalone’s single up the middle brought him home two batters later to get SJU back within a run at 7-6.  A fielder’s choice then put runners on the corners for Namey, who ripped a double down the left field line to score Giacalone and tie the game.

Walks to Brown and Andrew Herrera started the bottom half of the seventh for Yale, and after a sacrifice bunt by Otaka advanced the runners, DeGraw came up with an RBI groundout to put the Bulldogs back in front.

The Bulldogs then pushed five across in the bottom of the eighth to cushion the lead.  An error and a hit batsman put two on with two out for Brown, whose infield single scored pinch runner Tom Ruddy to double the lead.  Herrera and Otaka drew consecutive walks to bring in another run before DeGraw cleared the bases with a triple to push the lead to 13-7.

Saint Joseph’s scratched out a pair in the ninth.  Giacalone singled and Stafford doubled to bring up Charlie Concannon, whose groundout scored Giacalone to cut the deficit to five.  Namey followed with an infield single to score Stafford, but that would be all for SJU.

Matt Pennell took the loss for SJU after being charged with one run on four walks to go with a strikeout in two-thirds of an inning.  Kumar Nambiar got the win; he allowed one hit in two-thirds of an inning of relief.

Neither starter figured into the decision, as Pat Vanderslice was charged with seven runs, five earned, on five hits and four walks in five and a third innings.  He struck out a career-best nine Bulldogs on the day.  Eric Brodkowitz allowed seven runs, three of them earned, on six hits and three walks while fanning seven in six and a third innings for Yale.

The Hawks will close out their early-season road swing with two more games in Virginia.  SJU visits Liberty on Tuesday afternoon before facing Longwood on Wednesday evening.
