DeLAND, Fla. – Pat Vanderslice turned in seven strong innings on the mound, but the Saint Joseph’s baseball team ultimately fell to Connecticut, 11-0, in their final game at the Westin Lake Mary Stetson Invitational at Melching Field on Sunday afternoon.

Vanderslice allowed just two unearned runs on three hits in seven innings.  He struck out eight and did not walk a batter.  Matt Cuppari and Cal Jadacki added two hits apiece for the Hawks.

It was a pitcher’s duel early, as the teams combined for just seven base runners in the first four innings.  The Huskies put runners on second and third with one out in the top of the second, but Vanderslice notched a strikeout and induced a ground ball to escape the jam.

Connecticut (6-4) got on the board in the fifth as Chris Winkel reached on an error, stole second, went to third on a single, and scored on a double play grounder by Keith Krueger.  UConn tacked on another in the sixth after an error allowed Anthony Prato to reach third and come in to score on a sacrifice fly by Zac Susi.

Saint Joseph’s (0-9) had an opportunity in the seventh, putting two on with two out, but Dan Rajkowski came out of the bullpen and ended the threat with a ground ball.

The Huskies broke the game open in the eighth, scoring four times on three hits and three walks.  UConn put the game out of reach in the top of the ninth, plating five more runs on three hits, two walks, and a hit batsman.

Mason Feole got the win for UConn, improving to 2-0 after allowing three this and two walks while striking out five in five and two-thirds shutout innings.  Vanderslice was the hard-luck loser, falling to 0-2.

Saint Joseph’s returns to the diamond on Wednesday afternoon at Maryland.  First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
