ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Saint Joseph's women's tennis team opened the spring portion of its schedule at Navy, falling to the Midshipmen by a 6-1 score at the Tose Family Tennis Center on Saturday.

"We never start with easy matches as for both teams we want to see where we stand without easy schedules that really do not give us the information needed," said SJU head coach Ian Crookenden. "After seeing our squads compete against a tough Navy program, I am very confident that by the end of February with a couple more matches under our belt we will be playing in full stride and having good success. The men played some very close matches and though the ladies displayed a few more first match jitters, they also fought hard and well against very well trained and disciplined opponents. It was a heartening opening match for both teams."

Opening with doubles play, seniors Claire Minnoe and Alex Zachem battled Audrey Channell and Danika Kahatapitiya. In a back-and-forth-match, the Navy duo prevailed in the end, 7-6 (5).

The Midshipmen earned the match's first point as they picked up wins at the other two flights.

Moving to singles play, Minnoe and Rozel Hernandez battled to three sets at the top flight. In a competitive match, it was hernandez who came out with the win, 7-6 (5), 5-7, 11-9. At the fourth flight, Zachem picked up SJU's point on the day as she topped Kahatapitiya, 6-4, 7-6 (4).

Navy picked up wins at the other singles flights.

The Hawks (0-1) are back in action at Carnegie Mellon on February 4.
