INDIANAPOLIS – Saint Joseph's men's track and field junior distance standout Zach Michon has qualified for the 2019 NCAA East Regional Preliminary Rounds in the 1500m, it was announced through the release of the official declaration list on Thursday afternoon. Hosted by the University of North Florida at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida, the meet will run from Thursday, May 23 through Saturday, May 25 and will feature the top collegiate athletes east of the Mississippi River.
For each individual event contested at each of the preliminary championships competition sites, the top 48 declared student-athletes are accepted into competition.
A live stream for all three days of competition will be made available through FloTrack, while live results will be made available through NCAA.com.
"I am extremely excited for this opportunity," said Michon of his qualification. "Qualifying for this meet in any event has been one of my goals since beginning my collegiate career."
Michon ran a collegiate-best time of 3:46.28 at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational back on April 20. That time ranks 45th on the declared list entering the First Round, which is set for Thursday, May 23 at 6:00 p.m. The field of 48 will race in four heats of 12. The top five finishers from each heat, plus the next four overall racers with the best times, will advance to Saturday's Quarterfinals, set for May 25 at 6:45 p.m.
That field of 24 will race in two heats of 12. The top five finishers from both heats, plus the next two overall racers with the best times, will advance to the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, to be held from Tuesday, June 4 through Saturday, June 8 at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
14 Hawks have qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Saint Joseph's men's track and field program history; Kevin McDonnell was the most recent, qualifying in the 10,000m in 2013.
