ELON, N.C. - The Saint Joseph's softball team wrapped up play at the Elon Tournament on Sunday splitting its two games. The Hawks fell to Iona, 5-4, in the opener, but capped the weekend with a 3-1 win over host Elon.

In the final game of the tournament, the Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead.

Jancarla Herrera scored the first run of the game on a fielder's choice RBI by Kaylyn Zierke in the top of the first, while Zierke would later come around to score on a fielding error.

An RBI single by Herrera scored Taryn Grober in the second to give Saint Joseph's a three-run lead.

That would be all SJU would need as Madison Clarke and Ashley Ventura combined to hold Elon to just one run on five hits over seven innings. Clarke picked up the win in going four innings of one-run ball, while Ventura picked up the save working three innings of scoreless relief.

Versus Iona in the opener, the Hawks (3-7) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third as Molly Kapala scored off a sacrifice fly by Sarah Ostaszewski.

Iona answered back to tie it in the fifth and scored four times in the seventh to take a 5-1 advantage.

Saint Joseph's rallied in the bottom of the seventh. Taryn Grober scored the first run for the Hawks on an RBI single by Amanda Kulp. Following a pair of outs, SJU loaded the bases for Raelynn Genovese. The Hawks' sophomore delivered with a two-run single that scored Kulp and Kapala.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, Iona would keep the tying run on base as the Gaels got a ground out to end the game.

The Hawks are back in action next Friday at the USF Under Armour Showcase.
