PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer squad (2-1-1) is set to kick off a three-match road stretch, beginning at VMI (0-2-1) this Saturday, September 9. Kickoff at Patchin Field in Lexington, Va. is slated for noon.
Saturday’s match will mark the second all-time meeting between Saint Joseph’s and VMI. The Hawks own a 1-0-0 all-time series advantage after a 3-2 victory on September 7, 2002.
The Hawks are coming off of a thrilling, 2-1 overtime victory over Manhattan on Wednesday evening, where senior midfielder Matt Crawford's team-leading fifth goal of the year came as the late equalizer (73') and sophomore midfielder Matt Mullock's first collegiate goal came as the match-winner in overtime (94'). Senior goalkeeper Greg O'Connell assisted on Mullock's score and made three saves for his second win of the season.
Crawford has scored five of SJU's six goals this fall, while O'Connell (2-1-0) sports a 0.83 goals against average and .833 save percentage in 217:54. Senior defender Ben Zambetti, junior defender Eddie McCusker, freshman defender Daniel Morales, and freshman midfielder Aidan Watkins have played all 383 minutes through SJU's first four matches.
VMI is 0-2-1 after a season-opening, 2-2 draw at Longwood, a 3-0 loss at Liberty, and a 5-0 loss at Canisius. David Wright scored both goals at Longwood while goalkeeper Jon Harrington (0-2-1) owns a 3.10 goals against average and .630 save percentage in all 290:00.
The Keydets were were predicted to finish sixth of six teams in the SoCon Preseason Poll and finished 0-17-0 overall and 0-10-0 in the SoCon last year.
Under the direction of eighth-year head coach Don D'Ambra, Saint Joseph’s returns 14 Hawks and adds 11 first-year players for the 2017 season.
