PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph's men's soccer head coach Don D'Ambra has announced the incoming Class of 2023, which features six freshmen in time for the 2019 fall campaign.
New to Hawk Hill are freshmen Ben Delaney (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East), James Fletcher (Canberra, Australia/UC SSC Lake Ginninderra), Alex Hartmann (Hamburg, Germany/Gymansium Kaiser-Friedrich-Ufer), Ryan Hay (Waxahachie, Texas/Waxahachie), Chris Hunt (Delran, N.J./Delran), and Max Moyer (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing).
"I am really excited about the 2019 recruiting class," said D'Ambra. "We have a great mix of local, national, and international players. We feel we have addressed some positional needs, and we are super excited about the potential of all of the players. They are all very good soccer players, quality students academically, and high-character kids, so we feel good about this group of young men."
Ben Delaney • Forward
West Chester, Pa. • West Chester East High School
Penn Fusion Soccer Academy
Delaney was selected an All-ChesMont and All-Area First Team selection after recording 31 points on 17 goals and 14 assists to lead West Chester East to the 2018 ChestMont League Championship title as a senior.
Head coach Don D'Ambra on Delaney: "Ben has very good athletic attributes and is a competitor. As a forward, he has very good offensive instincts and a nose for the goal. Being a multi-sport athlete (lacrosse) has prevented him from playing at the highest level in club soccer, so he will need some time to develop, but his potential ceiling is very high."
James Fletcher • Defense
Canberra, Australia • UC SSC Lake Ginninderra
Fletcher joined the Hawks in time for the 2019 spring off-season. One of two incoming international players in the Class of 2023, Fletcher owns a mass amount of experience across Canberra, Australia's highest level of competition and played for the Australian National U-17 Team in 2016. Head coach Don D'Ambra on Fletcher: "James is an extremely intelligent soccer player and has the ability to be an impact player for this program. He represented his country on the Youth National Team and competed in several international tournaments. His vision, speed of play, and passing ability have impressed us thus far, and he is capable of scoring goals, as well. He has an infectious, positive attitude along with good leadership qualities."
Alex Hartmann • Defender
Hamburg, Gemany • Gymansium Kaiser-Friedrich-Ufer
Niendorfer TSV (U-19)
One of two incoming international players in the Class of 2023, Hartmann played for Niendorfer TSV (U-19), in the fifth tier of Oberliga Hamburg, and helped prevent relegation in the U-19 Bundesliga.
Head coach Don D'Ambra on Hartmann: "Alex has been playing in the highest youth league in Germany and brings a good level of experience. Alex has great size and aerial ability on both sides of the ball. His physical presence and calmness in the defensive position will be an asset to our program."
Ryan Hay • Midfielder
Waxahachie, Texas • Waxahachie High School
Solar Soccer Club
An All-Ellis County Player of the Year finalist and All-Region Team selection, Hay scored 15 goals as a center back and was tabbed the Aledo Tournament MVP and Waxahachie MVP. He played with Solar Soccer Club Development Academy from U-13 through U-17 and scored 12 goals in his U-17 year.
Head coach Don D'Ambra on Hay: "Ryan is an exciting player who brings a ton of versatility. He is an excellent two-way player with an excellent work rate. He has an ability to break defenses down with 1v1 and runs off the ball and will definitely bring depth in the offensive side of things. He is also capable of playing defense as well."
Chris Hunt • Central Midfielder
Delran, N.J. • Delran High School
Washington United Arsenal
Hunt was a Burlington County Scholastic League and All-County First Team selection at Delran High School, where he led the Bears to three consecutive South Jersey Sectional Championship titles from 2016-18, captaining the squad as a senior.
Head coach Don D'Ambra on Hunt: "Chris brings us great depth in the central midfield, and he is able to play the 6 or 8 positions very well, which increases his value. He has very good size and athletic ability, so I feel he can compete to get on the field immediately. Chris has a lot of potential because he has a good work rate and good understanding of the game by making smart decisions."
Max Moyer • Central Midfielder
Wyomissing, Pa. • Wyomissing Area High School
Moyer was a 2018 All-County First Team selection and member of the National Honor Society at Wyomissing Area High School and played club soccer for F.C. Revolution.
Head coach Don D'Ambra on Moyer: "Max gives us more depth in the central midfield position. He has a great soccer IQ, sees the field well, and has good technical ability. I think his desire to compete and his soccer intelligence will be major assets to the team."
