PHILADELPHIA – Ranked 10th in the region, the Saint Joseph’s men’s cross country squad will head to the 2017 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship this Friday, November 10. The 10k race is slated to begin at 11:45 a.m., hosted by Lehigh University at the Goodman Campus.

The top two teams and top four individuals receive automatic qualification for the 2017 NCAA Cross Country Championship, to be held on Saturday, November 18 in Louisville, Ky. Overall, the top two teams from each region, plus 13 at-large teams from across the country will qualify for the national meet. After teams have been determined, 38 additional individuals will be selected to compete at nationals. A complete breakdown of the qualification process can be found by clicking here.

Saint Joseph's seven runners to represent the Hawks at the 2017 Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship will be selected from the eight-member group of graduate student captain Dan Savage, senior captain Collin Crilly, senior captain David Dorsey, senior Anthony Morelli, juniors Jack Daly and Shawn Hutchison, and sophomores Josh Clark and Zach Michon.

Five of the eight listed Hawks own NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship experience, as Dorsey will run his fourth, and Crilly, Clark, Hutchison, and Savage will run their second.

Defending regional champion Georgetown is ranked first in the Mid-Atlantic while Princeton, Penn, Villanova, and Penn State round out the top five. Navy, Temple, American, and Bucknell sit 6-9 while George Washington, Lehigh, Pittsburgh, Duquesne, and Rutgers round out the top 15.

26 squads are scheduled to race, including American, Bucknell, Duquesne, George Washington, Georgetown, La Salle, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola (Md.), Marshall, Monmouth, Mount St. Mary's, Navy, NJIT, Penn, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Princeton, Rider, Rutgers, St. Francis (Pa.), Seton Hall, Temple, UMBC, and Villanova, and the Hawks.

Saint Joseph's finished ninth in a field of 22 teams at the 2016 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship and return point scorers in Savage (26th) and Dorsey (37th), as well as Crilly and Clark, SJU’s #6 and #7 runners. SJU will look to fill the vacancy of graduates Jimmy Daniels (64th) and John Mascioli (78th), who finished as SJU’s #4 and #5 runners. SJU was predicted to finish ninth at this year's meet.

All eight of these Hawks have raced the terrain of the Goodman Campus, albeit for Paul Short 8k races, throughout their careers. Dorsey (24:40, 2016) and Savage (24:58, 2015) are SJU's two Hawks to have gone sub-25:00 on the 8k course, while Hutchison ran the 8k for 25:02 in 2016.

Led by Savage's seventh-place showing, the Hawks are coming off of a second-place finish at the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship on October 28. Savage, Michon (15th), Crilly (18th), Hutchison (20th), and Dorsey (24th) scored while Clark turned in SJU's sixth-fastest performance.
