DAYTON, Ohio - Saint Joseph's women's basketball team rallied to force overtime at Dayton on a three-pointer by Kristalyn Baisden with :05.1 to play. But the Flyers pulled away in the extra frame for a 72-65 win at UD Arena on Sunday.
Backed by career-highs from Baisden (23 points) and Katie Jekot (24 points), the Hawks (6-14, 2-5 Atlantic 10) rallied from down four with less than 30 second to go to force overtime, but were outscored 21-14 in extra time.
Down 49-45 with :22 left in the fourth quarter, the Hawks cut Dayton's lead to 49-48 on a three-pointer by Jekot.
Following a pair of Dayton free throws by Lauren Cannatelli to make it 51-48, Baisden drained a contested three-pointer from the left wing to tie it with :05.1 to play.
The Flyers had a chance to win at the end of regulation as Shakeela Fowler was fouled with under a second to play, but missed both free throws.
In overtime, Dayton took the early momentum as it ran out to a 10-0 streak to make it 61-51 on a pair of Cannatelli free throws with 2:02 left.
Saint Joseph's continued to battle as Baisden's fifth three-pointer of the day made it 62-59 at 1:03.
Dayton allowed the Hawks to get no closer though as it closed out the game going 10-10 from the foul line.
For the game, Saint Joseph's shot 38.3 percent from the field (18-47), 42.9 percent from three-point range (6-14) and hit 9-15 from the foul line.
Jekot finished the game 7-15 from the field, including 4-8 from behind the arc, and 6-7 from the foul line for 24 points and added four rebounds and two assists, while Baisden was 6-13 from the floor, 5-7 from three-point range and 6-7 from the foul line for 23 points.
At the other end, Cannatelli led Dayton with 26 points, including 22-22 from the foul line, as the Flyers shot 35.3 percent for the game (18-51), 27.3 percent from three-point range (3-11), but went 33-40 from the foul line.
Saint Joseph’s has a week between games as the Hawks return home to host VCU next Sunday, February 3, at 2 p.m.
