BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Hawks took home wins in the 400m and Distance Medley Relay and turned in a trio of IC4A-qualifying DMR performances as the Saint Joseph’s men’s track and field squad finished fourth overall with 72 points at the Lehigh Angry Birds Challenge on Saturday afternoon. Hosted by Lehigh University at the Rauch Field House, the meet saw Penn (171 points), Monmouth (151), Lehigh (124), and SJU compete.

Senior Torey Doaty won the 400m in 50.92 to take home nine points for the Crimson and Gray.

Saint Joseph’s qualified three Distance Medley Relay groups for the IC4A Championships, led by the winning combination of junior Dave Garton (3:07.0), junior Kenny Evely (50.4), junior Steve Thompson (1:55.5), and freshman Josh Clark (4:23.4) with a time of 10:16.53.

The Hawks also qualified their runner-up group of senior Jack Magee (3:10.5), senior Eddison Gulama (50.0), junior Dan Ferraiolo (1:57.8), and freshman Zach Michon (4:18.0) in 10:16.57 and their fourth-place group of junior Collin Crilly, freshman Justin Moscoe, junior Barren McCoy, and senior Dan Savage (10:23.67); the final group's conversion time qualified.

SJU’s 4x400m relay of freshman Aaron Lemma (53.0), Doaty (50.0), freshman Will Davies (52.5), and freshman Trae’ Robinson (52.2) checked in with a second-place finish in 3:27.82, good for seven points.

In his season debut, junior Anthony Morelli placed second in the field of seven 5000m racers in a time of 15:28.73 for nine points; Morelli’s performance was the top college performance, as race-winner Sean Burke (15:23.70) raced unattached.

Senior Mike Cassidy added five points in the 5000m (16:00.32) while freshman Moscoe earned a fifth-place finish in the 400m (51.94) for four points.

Lemma cruised through the 200m in 23.89 for sixth overall, while classmate David Bryant clocked in at 24.32 for 13th as the rookie pair combined for seven points. Earlier in the afternoon, Bryant had made his collegiate debut in the 60m dash with a time of 7.45, which was good for 11th in the preliminaries.

Sophomore Dylan Eddinger (2:00.49) and freshman John Walker (2:01.19 PR) placed seventh and ninth, respectively, in an 800m field of 21 to combine for six points.

SJU’s jumpers totaled 11 points on the day. Freshman Eron Swan posted a season-best long jump mark of 6.51m, which was good for second in his flight and eighth overall in a field of 20 for three points and added a two-point effort in the triple jump (12.15m). Sophomore Alec Arena high jumped for 1.84m to place eighth in a three-point effort while senior Prince Charles Yakubu earned three points with a team-best performance in the triple jump (12.26m).

Senior Jimmy Daniels (4:26.51) and sophomore John Podles (4:26.67) placed 12th and 13th, respectively, in a field of 39 milers to combine for three points for the Crimson and Gray, and senior Evan Guerin earned two points in the 3000m (9:13.81) to round out SJU's scoring.

Saint Joseph’s returns to action next Saturday, January 21 at both the Ursinus Collegeville Classic, set to begin at 10:00 a.m. at Ursinus’ Floy Lewis Bakes Center in Collegeville, Pa., and at the Penn 8 Team Select, set to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y.
