DAVIDSON, N.C. – Dominic Cuoci hit his third home run of the series on Sunday afternoon, but a three-run eighth ultimately led to a 5-3 win for Davidson in the series finale between the two teams at Wilson Field.
Davidson (13-13 overall, 4-5 Atlantic 10) opened the scoring in the bottom of the third as Justin Lebek was hit by a pitch before being erased on a fielder’s choice by Max Bazin. Tyler Agard followed with a double to score Bazin and give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Three batters later, Alec Acosta singled home Agard to double the lead.
Saint Joseph’s (6-14 overall, 1-2 Atlantic 10) cut the lead in half in the fourth as Brian Lau led off with a single and advanced to second on a groundout by Cal Jadacki. Cuoci followed with a single, and two batters later, Taylor Boyd hit a single of his own to bring home Lau.
The Hawks tied things up in the seventh as Peter Sitaras led off with an infield single and went to third on a failed pickoff attempt by Austin Leonard. Sitaras then came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Matt Maul to tie the game at two.
Cuoci then gave the Hawks a brief lead with a one-out home run in the eighth, but Will Robertson greeted reliever Jake Meyers with a first-pitch home run in the bottom of the frame to tie the game once again. Then, after a pair of singles, a two-out hit from Lebek put the Wildcats back on top before Bazin singled home an insurance run to set the final margin.
Westin Whitmire earned the win after allowing a run on two hits over the final inning and two-thirds of the game. Jake Meyers took the loss for the Hawks after allowing three runson five hits in an inning of relief.
Lucas Rollins pitched well for SJU, allowing two runs on only four hits and a walk in seven innings. He struck out four on the day.
Saint Joseph’s returns home for a four-game homestand beginning on Tuesday. Lafayette is set to visit Smithson Field at 3:00 p.m. before George Mason comes to Hawk Hill for a weekend series beginning on Friday.
