MERION STATION, Pa.Charlie Concannon, Marc Giacalone, and Kadar Namey each hit home runs on Tuesday afternoon as the Saint Joseph’s baseball team beat Villanova, 9-1, at Smithson Field.

In the Hawks’ home opener, it was Villanova (2-12) that got on the board first, plating a first-inning run after Donovan May led off the game with an infield single, advanced on a ground out, and came in to score on a wild pitch and a throwing error.

Saint Joseph’s (2-11) had a runner on third in each of the first two innings – Deon Stafford, Jr., tripled in the first while Cal Jadacki walked to lead off the second and advanced on a two-out single by Taylor Boyd – but it wasn’t until the third that the Hawks were able to put any runs on the scoreboard.

And put them on the board they did, as Giacalone led off with a single and Stafford was hit by a pitch before Concannon hit into a fielder’s choice.  Namey followed with his first collegiate home run to put the Hawks on top, 3-1.

SJU added two more in the fifth as Jadacki and Dominic Cuoci hit consecutive two-out singles.  May misplayed Cuoci’s hit, allowing Jadacki to score and Cuoci to go to third.  Matt Maul then followed with an RBI single up the middle to extend the lead to four.

The Hawks blew things open in the seventh.  After two quick outs, Peter Sitaras extended the inning with a single and a stolen base before Giacalone went deep into the Hawk bullpen beyond the right field fence to push the lead to 7-1.

Stafford then followed with a single up the middle before Concannon deposited Zach Lutner’s offering into the Villanova bullpen to set the final margin.

Hayden Seig was credited with his first collegiate victory after he allowed one hit and two walks while striking out two in an inning and a third of relief.  Jonathan Rosero took the loss for Villanova after allowing three runs on five hits in three innings.

With Wednesday’s game at Bucknell postponed, the Hawks will return to action on Friday at Smithson Field when they host Bryant.  First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
