COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Four Hawks rapped out two hits apiece, but the Saint Joseph’s baseball team ultimately fell to Maryland, 11-5, at Bob “Turtle" Smith Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Juniors Marc Giacalone and Deon Stafford, Jr., each chipped in with two hits and two runs batted in, while sophomore Charlie Concannon added two hits of his own and freshman Brian Markoski was 2-for-4 in his first collegiate start.

Saint Joseph’s (0-10) hung a four-spot on the scoreboard in the top of the second to take an early lead.  Cal Jadacki led off with a walk and went to third on a single by Matt MaulPeter Sitaras followed with a single of his own to drive in Jadacki with the game’s first run before Taylor Boyd was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Two batters later, Giacalone notched his first hit of the day to bring home Maul and double the lead.  Stafford then followed with a two-run single to make it a 4-0 Hawk advantage.

Maryland (6-5) cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning on an RBI groundout by A.J. Lee and a solo home run by Justin Morris.  The Terrapins then drew level in the third on a two-run home run by Marty Costes.

Lee added a solo home run of his own in the sixth to give Maryland its first lead of the day, but Markoski hit a one-out double in the seventh, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a groundout by Giacalone to tie the game at stretch time.

Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, the Terrapins sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the eighth and plated six runs to come away with the win.

Mike Rescigno earned the win for Maryland, improving to 1-0 after a perfect inning of relief.  Justin Aungst took the loss for SJU, falling to 0-1 after allowing three runs on three hits and striking out four in three-plus innings of work.

The Hawks will continue southward as they play their next two games in Williamsburg, Virginia.  A road contest with William and Mary awaits on Friday night before a neutral site game against Yale is set for Saturday.
