MERION STATION, Pa. – Freshman Jordan Olenginski scored her first career goal late in the first half to put the Hawks on top and a late second-half surge put the game away as the Saint Joseph’s field hockey team blanked Drexel, 3-0, at Ellen Ryan Field on Sunday afternoon.

Freshmen Quinn Maguire and Emily Henry each found the back of the cage for the third time this season late in the second half, while sophomore Victoria Kammerinke made three saves for her first shutout of 2017.

Saint Joseph’s (3-1) opened the scoring with just under five minutes remaining in the first half, as Drexel’s Erin Gilchrist stopped shots from junior Anna Willocks and Maguire in quick succession on a penalty corner opportunity for two of her 10 saves on the day.  Fortunately for the Hawks, Olenginski picked up a rebound and fired over a sprawled-out Gilchrist to put SJU ahead.

Drexel (1-2) had an opportunity to level the match midway through the half, but junior Monica Tice came up with a defensive save to keep the Dragons off the board.

The Hawks finally got some breathing room with 6:05 to play as Willocks and Maguire connected for the second time in as many games to double the SJU advantage.  Less than 90 seconds later, Henry polished off the win with her third of the season, firing a shot into the lower left corner from near the top of the arc.

The Dragons had another prime chance, earning two penalty corners in the final 2:13 of the game, but sophomore Kathrin Bentz came up with a defensive save to preserve the shutout.

The Hawks controlled the run of play for much of the game, outshooting the Dragons, 17-6, but Drexel had a 4-2 advantage in penalty corners, including a 3-0 edge in the second half.

Saint Joseph’s will return to action on Friday as the Hawks visit James Madison, ranked 19th in the NFHCA Preseason Poll, on Friday.  Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
