PHILADELPHIA – For the first time in men's soccer program history, the Hawks and Bobcats will meet on the pitch as the Saint Joseph's men's soccer squad (1-0-1) will open road action at Quinnipiac (0-2-0) this Saturday, September 2. Kickoff at the QU Soccer Field in Hamden, Conn. is slated for 2:00 p.m.
The Hawks defeated Temple, 3-1, in the season opener last Friday evening and are coming into Saturday's match after a 1-1 draw with Hartford on Tuesday evening.
Atlantic 10 Co-Offensive Player of the Week and Philadelphia Soccer Six Offensive Player of the Week senior midfielder Matt Crawford scored all three of SJU's goals in the Hawks' 3-1 win over Temple on Friday, while senior goalkeeper and Philadelphia Soccer Six Defensive Player of the Week Trevor Nicol held the Owls scoreless in the final 55:24, making two saves in his collegiate debut.
Crawford also scored SJU's goal vs. Hartford on a PK, with the foul drawn by freshman midfielder Ritchie Barry, while Nicol made two saves in the full 110:00 in his first collegiate start.
Quinnipiac is 0-2-0 after falling to Boston College, 4-0, and UConn, 1-0 OT, both on the road. Chrysostomos Iakovidis (0-2-0) has seen all 183:57 in net. The Bobcats, defending MAAC regular-season champions, were predicted to win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference this fall while five players were tabbed to the Preseason All-Conference Team in forward Eamon Whelan (2016 MAAC Rookie of the Year), midfielder James Doig, defenders Jeppe Haehre and Conor McCoy, and Iakovidis.
Under the direction of eighth-year head coach Don D'Ambra, Saint Joseph’s returns 14 Hawks and adds 11 first-year players for the 2017 season. The Hawks are captained by 2016 Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team selection Crawford, senior defender Ben Zambetti, and junior defender Eddie McCusker.
