Decisive Fourth Quarter Helps Drexel Past Hawks

PHILADELPHIA - Tied at 38 after three quarters, Drexel's women's basketball team outscored Saint Joseph's 22-11 in the final period to earn a 60-49 victory Sunday afternoon at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.

In a tight contest in which neither team led by more than seven points over the opening 30 minutes, the Hawks (3-7) held a 42-41 lead with 6:54 to play on a layup by junior Chelsea Woods.

From there the Dragons (6-2) took control of the game at both ends of the court as they used a 9-1 run over the next 3:03 to take a 50-43 edge. Drexel held Saint Joseph's to just 1-of-2 from the foul line and caused a pair of turnovers, while on the offensive end went 3-of-6 from the field, including four second-chance points, to start to pull away.

Saint Joseph's cut the Dragons' lead to five twice, but Drexel closed out the game hitting 4-of-4 from the foul line and causing three Hawks turnovers in the final two minutes.

For the game, the Hawks went 17-of-45 from the field (37.8 percent), 3-of-14 from three-point range (21.4 percent) and 12-of-16 from the foul line. Saint Joseph's finished with a 37-28 edge in rebounds, but turned the ball over 20 times to Drexel's eight.

Individually, Woods had a team-high 14 points to go with eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior Adashia Franklyn chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds, with sophomore Alyssa Monaghan finishing with 10 points and three assists.

At the other end, Ana Ferariu led all scorers with 18 points as Drexel finished the game 21-of-55 from the floor (38.2 percent), 5-of-11 from behind the arc (45.5 percent) and 13-of-19 from the foul line (68.4 percent).

Saint Joseph's returns to action this Thursday as the Hawks host Hofstra at 5 p.m.
