Saint Joseph's dropped a tough 4-0 decision to the Charlotte 49ers Friday night on Finnesey Field. SJU couldn't overcome Charlotte's stingy defense. The loss was the Hawks' eighth straight.
The 49ers struck just under 12 minutes into the game on a Whitney Bryant goal. Her crossing effort made its way over SJU's keeper, Megan Bastianelli, and caught the far post netting for the 1-0 lead.
Twelve minutes after that, Sam Huecker torched the net on a scramble in front of the net for a 2-0 lead with assists by Katie Davies and Hailey Beam.
Charlotte continued to control the game, rarely releasing its possession. The 49ers' hold of possession paid dividends as Nikki Dumencich scored in the 33rd minute on a cross from Sam Huecker.
Despite the 3-0 lead, the Hawks never gave up. Saint Joseph's didn't have many shots to show for their efforts, but the Hawks had possession of the ball for much of the second half. Nevertheless, Charlotte's counterattack was potent, racking up eight shots and five corners.
The 49ers would add a late goal by Katie Hadley off a through ball by Lindsey Ozimer.
Saint Joseph's was outshot 15-5 for the game. Bastianelli recorded eight saves in the loss.
Charlotte improved to 7-3-1 and Saint Joseph's dipped to 2-9-0. The Hawks return to action Sunday hosting Saint Louis at 2:00 p.m. on Finnesey Field.
