NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A pair of Saint Joseph's distance runners in graduate student Collin Crilly and sophomore Matthew Scarpill have been voted onto the Atlantic 10 Men's Outdoor Track and Field Academic All-Conference Team, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon. Additionally, freshman sprinter Michael Welde has been named to the A-10 Outdoor Track and Field All-Rookie Team in the 400m.
To be nominated for the 12-member Academic All-Conference Team, student-athletes must have a GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) for their entire academic career. The teams were selected through voting conducted by the league's Sports Information Directors.
After completing his final collegiate cross country season on November 9 of this past fall, Crilly missed the indoor track and field season due to exhausted eligibility but came back with fire for his final outdoor campaign, beginning with a season-opening win in the 3000m (8:40.22) at the Rider 5-Way Meet on March 30. He followed up by anchoring the third-place 4x1500m relay and placing ninth in a 5000m field of 56 at the prestigious Colonial Relays and ran a 4:12.3 second leg on the 4xMile relay that set the new school record at the Penn Relays in late April.
Crilly capped his career with a phenomenal postseason run, placing second in the 5000m in a collegiate-best time of 14:29.42 for silver at the A-10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships before earning a pair of All-East performances in the 4x800m relay (4th, 7:43.31) and 1500m (7th, 3:51.73 PR) at the IC4A Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Scarpill ran with a primary focus on the 1500m and 3000m steeplechase this spring. The sophomore placed fourth in the 1500m (4:04.11) at the season-opening Rider 5-Way Meet and led off the third-place 1500m relay - the same one anchored by Crilly - at the Colonial Relays in early April. Scarpill then won the 3000m steeplechase in a then-PR time of 9:38.07 to earn his first collegiate victory at Lehigh's Carol and John Covert Classic before heading into postseason competition.
At A-10s, Scarpill went for a collegiate-best 3000m steeplechase time of 9:19.63 for a seventh-place, two-point scoring performance and followed up with the fastest 1500m race of his collegiate career (3:55.58 PR) for 25th at IC4As.
Crilly, who graduated from Saint Joseph's in May 2018 with degrees in both accounting and finance and is currently pursuing his MBA on Hawk Hill, and Scarpill, an actuarial science major, are joined on the Academic All-Conference Team by Duquesne's Noah Ball and Isaac Elliott, Fordham's Andrew Byrne and Ryan Kutch, UMass' Nathan Adeyemi, Rhode Island's Adam Franklin and Derek Jacobs, and Saint Louis' Brett Kowalczyk, Ben Naeger, and Tannock Blair.
The A-10 All-Rookie Team is comprised of the top rookie performer in each event from meets conducted from the start of the regular season through the A-10 Championships.
Welde raced the 400m five times this outdoor season. He made his outdoor debut in the event at the Rider Invitational (5th, 49.08) before clocking in with a time of 49.38 for 15th at the Princeton Larry Ellis Invitational. He then went sub-49.00 in the A-10 prelims (48.91) to advance to the finals, where he earned a sixth-place, three-point scoring performance with his collegiate-best time of 48.60. He closed the season with a time of 49.59 for eighth at IC4As.
His time of 48.60 led all A-10 freshmen and ranked 10th in the entire conference.
