PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team's 2018-19 season came to a close on Friday as the eighth-seeded Hawks fell to top seed VCU, 58-47, in the Quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
Fighting until the final whistle, Saint Joseph's battled back from as many as eight points down in the first half to take a 32-31 lead on a three-pointer by Kristalyn Baisden at the 7:03 mark of the third quarter.
The two teams traded baskets over the next three minutes, leading to a 37-37 tie on a layup by Katie Jekot at 4:12.
Pushing ahead 40-39, VCU (22-8) pulled away for good as the Rams used a 13-0 run that spanned until midway through the fourth quarter to open a 53-39 lead.
Saint Joseph's (12-19), which was held to 2-15 shooting (13.3 percent) in the fourth quarter, would get no closer than the final score.
For the game, Saint Joseph's shot 28.8 percent overall (17-59), 42.1 percent from behind the arc (8-19), and 5-10 from the foul line.
Playing in her final game as a Hawk, Baisden led SJU with 17 points, while Jekot tallied nine points. Senior Alyssa Monaghan, who had five points and two assists in her last game in Crimson and Gray, capped her career as the program's all-time leader in minutes played (4,117), third all-time in career three-pointers made (220) and three-pointers attempted (626), fifth all-time in free throw percentage (.840) and 12th in points (1,257 points).
VCU's Tera Reed led all scorers with 21 points as the Rams finished the game shooting 42 percent from the floor (21-50) and 28.6 percent from three-point range (2-7), and hit 14-26 free throws (53.8 percent).
