GREENWOOD, Ind. – Saint Joseph's sophomore defender David Grana has been voted onto the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District Men's Soccer First Team, selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced on Thursday afternoon. First Team Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second-, and third-team All-America honorees will be announced in early December.
A biology major out of Rochester, New York, Grana is the only sophomore on the 11-member team and one of just two selections to carry a 4.00 GPA.
The announcement comes just hours following Grana's selection onto the 2018 Atlantic 10's All-Academic Team.
Grana started all 18 matches as a right back on SJU's defensive line that recorded four clean sheets on an 8-7-3 season en route to an eventual team-leading 1,653 minutes played. Grana scored his first collegiate goal against Sacred Heart (59') and dished out a pair of assists against St. Bonaventure (69') and Drexel (15').
Grana becomes just the second Hawk in program history to earn Academic All-District First Team honors, joining Ryan Dougherty (2001), and just the third Hawk in program history to earn recognition from the organization, joining Dougherty and Second-Team selection Matt James (2003).
Joining Grana on the District 2 First Team are Fairleigh Dickinson's Ahu Obhakan and Wojciech Piwowarczyk, Elliot Otmani of Rider, Robert Morris' Zac Sherman, Hermann Doerner of Temple, Northern Kentucky's Rikard Lindqvist, Austin Stout of Duquesne, American's Tim Neumann, John Pappas of Marshall, and Thor Arne Höfs of George Washington.
