MERION STATION, Pa. – Amanda Nava reached the finals of the top singles flight on Sunday morning as the Saint Joseph's women's tennis team wrapped up play at the 2019 SJU Invitational at the SJU Tennis Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Nava won her semifinal match, 7-6 (3), 6-3, over Claudia Althans of Villanova before ultimately falling in the final.
• Anna Kirk and Ireland Amato fell in the second and third flight semifinals, respectively, on Sunday morning.
• Sophia Amato also earned a win; she reached the final of the third consolation flight with a 7-5, 6-2 semifinal triumph over Rachel Carroll of Bucknell.
"It was a very exciting weekend with good play from all squad members," head coach Ian Crookenden said. "Amanda's level of play in the final was outstanding, and after dropping the first set after leading 5-2, she regrouped from 0-3 in the second to win it and go down in a hard-fought supertiebreaker.
"Freshmen Anna Kirk, Stow Weiss, Ireland Amato, and Sophia Amato all performed well and several consolation awards went on their shelves. Paige Conrad and Alex Kramer both showed big improvements from the previous year as well. Madeline Hill beat Iswarya Vel to claim consolation honors in singles while Madison Chontos and Katherine Devlin both played well against some strong opposition.
The Hawks are idle until ITA Regionals begin on October 25.
