AMHERST, Mass. - Fifth seed Saint Joseph's topped fourth seed Dayton, 11-0, in five innings on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2019 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship. Backed by a stellar two-hit performance in the circle by senior Ashley Ventura and 11 runs on 14 hits by the Hawks' offense, SJU advances to face top seed Fordham on Thursday at 11 a.m.
After a scoreless second inning, Saint Joseph's opened a 5-0 lead with four runs in the top of the third. Kirstin Cox opened the scoring as she crossed home plate on a double down the left field line by Caela Abadie. Taryn Grober singled home Abadie and Ostaszewski, then came around to score the final run of the inning as she tagged the plate off an infield single by Jancarla Herrera that dribbled away from a diving Dayton third baseman.
The Hawks (27-23) opened an 11-0 edge in the top of the fifth as they scored six runs on six hits to push Dayton to the brink.
With the bases loaded and one out, Kulp singled down the third base line to score pinch runner Ashley Hession for the first run, while Cox followed with a single through the left side to plate Herrera to make it 7-0. Following a bases loaded walk to Ostaszewski that scored Carly Rybinski, Molly Kapala singled to center to score Kulp and up the lead to nine.
Caela Abadie collected the final two RBI on the day with a single to center that scored Cox and Ostaszewski to give the Hawks an 11-0 advantage.
Needing only three outs to advance, Ventura made quick work of the Flyers in the bottom of the fifth as she set Dayton down in order to pick up the victory to improve to 14-15 on the season.
At the plate, Kulp was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI, while Cox was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Ostaszewski went 1-for-2 with a walk, two RBI and two runs scored, while Abadie was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored as all nine SJU batters finished with at least one hit on the day.
