PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph’s junior catcher James McConnon was voted the Big 5 Baseball Player of the Week on Monday evening after helping lead the Hawks to a pair of wins last week against Big 5 and Atlantic 10 rival La Salle.

McConnon hit safely in all four games the Hawks played last week, posting a .500 average as well as a blistering .650 on-base percentage.  On Thursday, he went 3-for-5 with a walk, three runs scored, and two RBI as the Hawks routed La Salle, 20-7.  He then reached base five times, going 2-for-2 with two walks and was hit by a pitch on Friday.

The Springfield, Pa., native then went 1-for-4 with an RBI on Saturday, and drew a walk with two outs to keep the Hawks alive in the bottom of the ninth as they rallied for three runs and an eventual 6-5 extra-inning win.

McConnon has been one of the Hawks’ most consistent performers this season, recording a .323 batting average and a .430 on-base percentage, both tops on the team.  He also ranks among the team leaders in runs scored and RBI and has been charged with just one error behind the plate all season.

The Hawks return to action on Tuesday night when they visit Rider.  First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. at Arm & Hammer Park in Trenton, New Jersey.
