LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior distance standout Zach Michon flew to one of the most outstanding outdoor 5000m performances in program history to lead the Saint Joseph's men's track and field distance runners at the Bucknell Bison Invitational, held at Bucknell's Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Saturday evening.
Michon ran a collegiate-best 5000m time of 14:10.53 (IC4A qualifier), which was good for third overall and second among all attached runners in the field of 76. The time launches Michon into fifth on SJU's All-Time Top-Ten Outdoor Performers List.
In the 1500m, junior John Walker went for an IC4A-qualifying time of 3:49.37 (21st field of 62) while graduate student captain Collin Crilly (3:52.36, IC4A qualifier, 32nd) and senior Jack Daly (3:58.39, 58th) ran collegiate-best times. Out of the other 1500m section, redshirt freshman George Steinhoff won his section in a collegiate-best time of 3:57.65 to place 18th (field of 109).
In his first collegiate outdoor 10,000m, sophomore Bobby Hastie crossed in 31:41.25, good for 12th in the field of 37 and just off from IC4A qualification by 11.25 seconds. Classmate Matthew Scarpill turned in his first career 3000m steeplechase time (9:51.32) for 43rd in a field of 61.
Senior Will Sponaugle (14:55.20, 52nd) added a collegiate-best time in the 5000m.
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Saint Joseph's men's track and field squad turned in a fourth-place team showing in a field of 14 teams at the Rider Invitational, held at Rider University's Track and Field Complex on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks totaled 97 points on the day.
The Hawks earned first-place finishes in both the 4x400m relay and 4x800m relay; junior Trae' Robinson, freshman Javier Linares, freshman Kyle Magee, and freshman Michael Szwed went for an IC4A-qualifying time of 3:16.93 in the 4x4 while junior Joey Angelina, freshman Aidan Sauer, junior Colin Parker, and freshman Zach Smith recorded a 4x8 time of 8:13.55. Those two relays took home 20 combined points for the Crimson and Gray.
Senior high jumper Markell Lodge also took home a victory, recording a high jump mark of 6' 6 1/4" for first in the field of seven for 10 SJU points. The mark sits as his second-highest attempt over two collegiate outdoor seasons.
Freshman Michael Welde placed third in the 200m (22.51) for eight points while Robinson (48.89 PR), Welde (49.08 PR), and junior captain Justin Moscoe (49.10 PR) went fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively, to combine for 12 points out of the 400m.
Senior captain Rory Houston (season-best 1:53.56) and Szwed (1:53.59 PR) went second and third out of the 800m field of 62 to combine for 14 points while junior Colin Gallagher added a fourth-place, eight-point effort out of the 5000m (16:09.10).
Magee turned in a third-place, eight-point performance (second among attached competitors) out of the 400m hurdles (56.41) while rookie classmate Jon McGrory went 10:02.27 for third place and six points in his second collegiate 3000m steeplechase, over a 24-second improvement from two weekends back.
Saint Joseph's returns to action next weekend at both the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton University's Weaver Stadium in Princeton, N.J. and the Widener Invitational at Widener's Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium in Chester, Pa. Both meets are set to run from Friday, April 19 through Saturday, April 20.
