Billy Lange was officially introduced as the 15th head coach of the Saint Joseph’s men’s basketball program today before a packed crowd in the Ramsay Basketball Center’s Wynne Hall of Fame Room.

SJU Welcomes Billy Lange

“With great admiration for the history of our program and great enthusiasm for the vision of its new leader, we welcome coach Billy Lange,” said University President Dr. Mark C. Reed.

“I welcome the responsibility of being the next steward of Saint Joseph’s basketball. Many coaches have led on Hawk Hill with passion and diligence and I am honored to be able to contribute to this program’s legacy,” said Lange, who spent the last six seasons as an assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Lange brings more than 23 years of sideline experience to the Hawks, including college head coaching stints at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy.  He has also served as an assistant coach at Villanova, La Salle and Philadelphia University, where he started his collegiate coaching career under Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame coach Herb Magee.

Billy Lange has a vision, and he has a plan. He is both a student an innovator of the game,” said Director of Athletics Jill Bodensteiner. “Billy has deep roots and experience in Philadelphia basketball. To say he understands and appreciates the history and tradition of SJU basketball and the Big 5 is a massive understatement."

“Off and on the court, he will bring a contagious level of effort and intensity to our student-athletes on a daily basis. In many ways, he can’t help it. He is a Hawk by birth. And, today, he becomes the Hawk to whom we entrust our greatest athletic tradition,” said Bodensteiner.

Lange vowed to embrace the high basketball aspirations of the student-athletes who come to Saint Joseph’s, saying, “We will go all in on helping our student-athletes pursue their passions. We want current and future Hawks to know that we are dedicated to helping them chase their dreams.”
