Saint Joseph's men's basketball coach Phil Martelli will be among the honorees at the Widener University Athletics Hall of Fame dinner on October 12, as the school will induct the 1977-78 men's basketball team, of which he was an assistant coach.

Martelli, a 1976 graduate of Widener, will speak on behalf of the team at the dinner at the Springfield Country Club..

That team, led by head coach C. Alan Rowe, won 21 games in a row and advanced to the Division III national championship game, finishing with a 26-5 record. Widener's squad was known for its defense as it held opponents to 54.3 points per game. That squad is the only men's basketball team at Widener to reach the national title game.

As a player, Martelli was part of Widener's NCAA Tournament teams in 1974-75 and 1975-76. He then took the assistant's position at his alma mater for his first college coaching job, and after one season, became the head coach at Bishop Kenrick High School. He came to Saint Joseph's as an assistant coach under Jim Boyle in 1985 and, after 10 years on staff, was named the 14th head coach in Hawk history in 1995.
