NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Saint Joseph’s freshman Tonya Botherway has been named the Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Player and Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.

Botherway scored four goals and added an assist as the Hawks moved into a tie for first place in the Atlantic 10 with a pair of victories over the weekend.

She netted her first career hat trick on Friday afternoon to lead Saint Joseph’s past Lock Haven, 4-1, in the Hawks’ first road game of the conference slate.  Two days later, she added another goal and pitched in with an assist as the Hawks flew past Saint Francis, 5-0.

The Auckland, New Zealand, native leads the squad and ranks second in the conference with 13 goals and 29 points; Botherway’s marks are both tops in the A-10 among rookies as well.

Botherway and the Hawks will take on a pair of local opponents this week as the Hawks visit Drexel on Friday before hosting Temple on Sunday.  Sunday’s game, part of the Philadelphia Classic Tournament, will also serve as Alumnae Day at Ellen Ryan Field.
