Saint Joseph’s redshirt junior forward Pierfrancesco Oliva has been selected to play for the Italian National Experimental Team, which will take part in a number of friendly games in early August in Italy, it was announced by the Italian Basketball Federation.

Oliva is among 16 players selected for this team who will be evaluated by Italy’s National Senior coaching staff for possible future selection to the Senior National Team. He is one of only two on the squad who have played collegiately in the United States, joining Nicola Akele, who previously played for Rhode Island.

The team will begin practice sessions on July 23 in Treviso and then head to Vicenza on August 2. The squad will take part in an International Tournament with games against Germany Experimental, Holland Experimental and a USA East Coast All-Star team coached by Larry Brown. They will close out play on August 7 with a friendly against Oklahoma State.

Oliva led the 2017-18 Hawks in rebounding with 6.8 per game, while averaging 6.6 points and 3.0 assists. The 6-8 forward from Taranto, Italy, was a starter in 22 games lasts season. He scored double figures in six games while grabbing double figures in rebounds five times.

He suffered a fracture in his left wrist in SJU's final game of the year, the A-10 Semifinals, but underwent successful surgery and had been cleared to play earlier this summer.
