Rising sophomore Sara Hayes of the Saint Joseph's field hockey team has been recognized for her community service participation by the Athlete CRUSH College Impact Awards, as she was named a finalist for the group's Catalyst Award.

Hayes took part in the Campus Ministry Appalachian Experience (APEX) spring break immersion program in March.  Hayes and a collection of Saint Joseph's students spent a week in Virginia, fostering community and the spirit of serving others while also working at Habitat for Humanity sites in the region.

A native of Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, Hayes also worked with MAGIS, a weekly service group for freshmen.  Members did at least three hours of service each week at various sites in Philadelphia.

"Both programs were absolutely amazing experiences and I am very fortunate to hopefully have made an impact and a difference on other people's lives," Hayes said.  "Saint Joseph's does a great job of truly 'living greater' with and for the people all around us."

The College Impact Catalyst Award goes to an individual who takes initiative to make a change, getting involved with or starting initiatives to do good in their community or the world around them.
