PHILADELPHIA – Upon the conclusion of Saint Joseph’s 2017-18 indoor track and field season, three Hawks have etched their names onto SJU’s all-time Top-Ten Performers list. Seniors Steve Thompson and David Henderson will leave their legacies in the 800m and 400m, respectively, while, just a sophomore, Zach Michon has earned a spot on both the mile and 3000m lists.
"When one athlete moves onto the Top-Ten Performers list, it shows his talent," said head coach Mike Glavin. "When three guys do so in four events in the same season, it shows a strength in the program and a contagious sense of dedication, with a commitment to the highest level of competitive performance. I think we're continuously moving to that attitude of excellence."
Thompson ran a collegiate-best 800m time of 1:51.34 in the preliminaries of the 2018 IC4A Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, March 3. After running his first collegiate sub-1:52.00 open 800m, Thompson will leave Hawk Hill ranked second on SJU’s Top-Ten Performers list behind the program’s recordholder, Bobby Jackson (1:50.39 in 1994).
Henderson ran a collegiate-best 400m time of 48.71 at the Villanova Invitational, held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. on February 3, which ranks him ninth on SJU’s Top-Ten Performers list. Henderson jumped onto the list by passing Geoff Valentine (48.95 in 2000) and former teammate Eddison Gulama (48.95 in 2017), who had been and remain tied for 10th.
Michon ran a collegiate-best mile time of 4:07.78 in the IC4A preliminiaries. That time earned him the eighth spot on the list, bumping down Aaron Leskow (4:07.97 in 2013) and Nick Costantino (4:08.14 in 1991) and bumping Steve Ave (4:09.79 in 1986) off the list.
In his first collegiate indoor 3000m race, Michon ran for 8:16.62 at the Villanova Invitational, which ranks him ninth on SJU’s Top-Ten Performers list. Michon jumped onto the list by bumping down Joe Abrams (8:17.60 in 1984) into the 10th spot.
Thompson, Henderson, Michon, and the Hawks open the 2018 outdoor track and field season at the 23rd Annual Monmouth Season Opener at Monmouth’s Kessler Stadium in West Long Branch, N.J. on Saturday, March 24.
