Saint Joseph’s seniors Shavar Newkirk and James Demery have been named to the 2018 Atlantic 10 All-Conference Teams, as voted on by the league coaches, with Newkirk earning a spot on the Second Team and Demery being named to the Third Team. It marks the first time that either player has earned All-Conference honors.
Newkirk returned to lead the team in scoring this season after an ACL injury cost him 19 games and derailed a potential All-League campaign a year ago. He tops the Hawks with 17.6 points per game, as well as assists with 3.8 and steals with 1.5, numbers which rank among the top 15 in the conference. Newkirk tallied double figures in all but three games this season, while notching 10 games with 20-plus points. The senior also leads the Hawks in free throw percentage, hitting 77.2 percent.
Demery, who has traded the Hawks’ scoring lead with Newkirk all year, is averaging a career-best 17.2 points per game, to go along with 5.5 rebounds. The forward ranks 11th in the A-10 in scoring and hit for double figures 27 times this season, while reaching 20-plus points nine times.
Both Demery and Newkirk surpassed the 1,000-point mark this season, giving Saint Joseph’s a total of 55 players in history who have achieved the milestone. Demery currently ranks 32nd on the all-time list with 1,269 points and is 42nd with 524 career rebounds. Newkirk has tallied 1,162 points to rank 37th and has handed out 322 assists in his career.
The Hawks (15-15; 10-8 A-10) have won three straight and six of their last seven games to earn the fourth seed in this week’s Atlantic 10 Championship at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. It is SJU’s highest since 2016 when it captured the title. Saint Joseph’s has a double-bye and will meet the winner of the George Mason vs. La Salle/Massachusetts game in the conference quarterfinals on Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. If SJU wins, it will advance to the semifinals on Saturday at 1 p.m.
