NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Freshman miler Matthew Scarpill was named to the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field All-Rookie Team, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon. The team is comprised of the top rookie performer in each event from meets conducted from the start of the regular season through the Atlantic 10 Championships.

Scarpill raced the mile five times this season, setting a season-best time of 4:16.32 at the Fastrack National Qualifier at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on February 9. That time led all rookie performances as the 18th-fastest mile time in the A-10 this winter.

This marks the second year in a row that the Hawks have claimed All-Rookie honors in the mile, as current sophomore Zach Michon earned the honor in the inaugural season of the A-10 Indoor Track and Field All-Rookie Team last year.

A native of Warrington, Pa., Scarpill will race the mile at the Fastrack Last Chance Invitational this Saturday, February 24 at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. The meet will serve as a final opportunity for the freshman to qualify for the upcoming IC4A Indoor Track and Field Championships, where the qualifying standard in the mile is 4:14.50.
