WESTON, Fla. - The Saint Joseph's golf team opened the spring portion of its schedule at the Atlantic 10 Match Play Championship at the Weston Hills County Club, Monday and Tuesday.
Playing in the head-to-head match play with each round consisting of six individual matches worth one point apiece, the Hawks opened play on Monday with the six-man squad of Tyler Sokolis, Ross Pilliod, Michael O'Brien, Richard Riva, Reed Winkler and Wills Montgomery.
In the opening match, Riva posted a victory over Marc Norton, 5 & 4, while Pilliod was a 3 & 1 winner over Thomas Giroux. Unfortunately for SJU, Oakland was able to earn victories in the other four singles matches to earn the team win, 4-2.
Facing George Washington in the second match on Monday, Sokolis earned a 6 & 4 win over Cliff Thompson, while Pilliod halved his match with Adrian Castagnola. Winkler and O'Brien would take their matches into the final holes, but the Colonials would prevail for the victory, 4.5-1.5
Versus Dayton in Tuesday's lone match, Riva halved with Erron Vandemore. However, the Colonials would finish with a 4.5-0.5 win despite competitive matches from O'Brien, Winkler and Pilliod.
Overall, the Hawks placed eighth in the two-day tournament.
The Hawks are back in action on March 25 at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate.
