ELKTON, Md. – The Saint Joseph’s men’s tennis team earned a pair of singles wins, but ultimately fell to a 5-2 defeat against Delaware at the Elkton Indoor Tennis Club on Sunday.

“It was a great battle on Delaware’s home turf and each match was a nailbiter,” head coach Ian Crookenden said.  “Without being able to call on Tim Stierle or Michael Santa Lucia due to health, the Hawk squad gave a strong account of its fight, but fell short.”

The shorthanded Hawks earned a doubles win from senior Nick Ringle and junior Andre Fick in the third fight, but the homestanding Blue Hens earned wins in the first two flights to secure the doubles point.

In singles play, Fick earned a fourth-flight win over Justice Jones, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 10-8 in a supertiebreaker.  In the second flight senior Peter Dewitt also came away with a tiebreaker victory, outlasting Colin Wong, 6-1, 6-7 (2), 10-5.

The Hawks return to action at the Springton Indoor Tennis Center on Saturday with a matchup against St. Francis (N.Y.) at 4:00 p.m.
