PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer squad (3-6-4, 1-1-1 A-10) hits the road to face Atlantic 10 defending champion Fordham (8-2-3, 2-0-1 A-10) this Saturday, October 14. Kickoff at Jack Coffey Field in the Bronx, N.Y. is slated for 7:00 p.m. The Rams currently tie for third in league standings with seven points, while the Hawks, predicted to finish 12th, currently sit eighth with four points.
Saturday’s match will mark the 19th all-time meeting between Saint Joseph’s and Fordham. The Rams own an 11-5-2 all-time series advantage and won the last meeting, 2-0, in 2014. SJU’s last win came in the form of a 1-0 road victory on November 10, 2013.
The Hawks are coming in off of a 2-2 draw with UMass on Wednesday evening; redshirt freshman defender Ben Cochran netted his second collegiate goal (61') on a feed from freshman midfielder Ritchie Barry and senior forward Isaac Agyapong netted his first of the year (74') on a play started by freshman defender David Grana.
Senior midfielder Matt Crawford has scored six of SJU's 14 goals this season, but 13 different Hawks own at least one point. Senior goalkeeper Greg O'Connell (3-6-3, 1-1-1 A-10) owns a 1.40 goals against average and .795 save percentage with a league-best 5.50 saves per match in 1094:03. Junior defender Eddie McCusker (1,259 minutes), freshman defender Daniel Morales (1,243), Crawford (1,197), and Barry (1164) are the only four Hawks to have started all 13 matches and lead SJU in minutes played.
Fordham opened its season with a scoreless draw vs. Elon, a 3-0 loss to Duke, a 1-0 win over St. John's, and a 1-0 loss to Columbia before going on a six-match unbeaten streak with wins over Lafayette (4-0), Marist (2-1), Quinnipiac (1-0), Manhattan (3-0), Bryant (1-0), and La Salle (1-0) and a draw with George Mason (1-1). The Rams then fell, 1-0, to VCU before picking up three points in a 2-0 road win over St. Bonaventure on Wednesday.
Janos Loebe (6g, 6a) and Jannik Loebe (4g, 1a) lead the Rams in scoring while Rashid Nuhu (8-3-2, 2-0-1 A-10) sports a league-best 0.52 goals against average and .829 save percentage to go with a league-best eight clean sheets in all 1210:00.
Fordham went 10-7-4 overall and 5-2-1 in the A-10 last fall. The Rams drew with VCU in the 2016 A-10 Championship match and advanced to the NCAA Championship on PKs, where they fell, 1-0, to Boston College.
