Saint Joseph’s men’s rowing announced that senior Garren Best has been elected team captain and classmate Claudio Recchilungo has been chosen team commodore for the 2017-18 season, as voted on by their teammates.
Best and Recchilungo were both members of the Hawks’ Varsity 8 that turned in a memorable season in 2016-17. Those Hawks earned a silver medal at the 2017 Dad Vail Regatta, for SJU's first Dad Vail medal in that event since 1999, and won the Bergen Cup, for the team’s first city title since 2008.
The duo was also part of SJU’s Varsity 8 that qualified for the IRA Championships, marking the first time in the IRA's current format of varsity-only crews and qualification standards instituted in 2009 that the Hawks received a bid to the championship. Saint Joseph’s placed third in the D Level final held in Sacramento, Calif.
Best, a food marketing major, was named to both the IRA All-Academic Team and the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team last season. He has also earned recognition on the SJU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, along with Recchilungo, who is a business major.
Saint Joseph’s opens the Fall season on Saturday, October 14 when it hosts the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River.
