MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team opened play on Friday at the ninth annual SJU Invitational.  The event, held at the SJU Tennis Complex, kicked off with doubles play as both the main and consolation draws played down to the semifinals.

In the first doubles flight, senior Peter Dewitt and junior Dan Tan took their first round matchup against Colin Lucis and Conner Merrill of La Salle, 8-4, before falling to Tommy Dodson and Tyler Roth of Villanova, 9-7, in the quarterfinals.

Juniors Tim Stierle and Michael Santa Lucia received a bye to the quarterfinals, as did sophomore Beekman Schaeffer and freshman Johnnie Massart.  Both duos fell, with Stierle and Santa Lucia dropping a 9-8 (3) heartbreaker to Tomas Christian and Francesco Mowrey of La Salle, while Massart and Schaeffer went down, 8-6, to Villanova's William Elmore and Tommy Mulflur.

Both pairs rebounded in the backdraw, however, as Stierle and Santa Lucia topped Bryant Born and George Cooper of Lehigh, 9-8 (1) in the consolation quarters, while Massart and Schaeffer got by Hamza Laalej and Youssef Lahlou of Drexel, 9-7, to set up a matchup of the two Hawk teams in the semifinal.

Senior Nick Ringle and junior Alexander Schneider were first round winners in the second flight, taking an 8-6 result from La Salle's Joseph DiOrio and Patrick Pascual before falling to Dylan Flanagan and Danny Nomura of Villanova, 8-4.

Junior Andre Fick and freshman Sam Sauter cruised to an 8-2 opening victory over Sam Bencheghib of Lehigh and Vuk Subotic of Drexel, but went to down Rogelio Gonzales and Stanislav Nepomnyaschiy of La Salle, 9-7, in the quarterfinals.

Sophomore Luis Janko and freshman Nathan Fioravante fell to Daniel Martinez and Jimmy Purdy of Villanova, 8-4, in the first round of the main draw, but went on to reach the semifinals of the consolation draw with an 8-6 win over La Salle's Andrija Bozovic and Liam Rodriguez.

Sophomore Scott Battaglia and freshman Alex MacNeil went down in the opening round to Delaware's Nathaniel Gedamu and Asdrubal Marcano, 8-6, and received a bye into the semifinals of the consolation draw.

Play commences at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday with main draw singles action.  Visit the Tournament Central page for updated results throughout the weekend.
