NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Saint Joseph's freshman cross country runner Abigail Silva has been selected the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday afternoon. The honor marks the first of the rookie's collegiate career.

Silva ran 23:59.5 for 6k to place 13th in a field of 59 racers at the Rider Invitational at Rosedale Park in Hopewell, N.J. on Friday evening. Silva finished as SJU's seventh runner overall and as the top Hawk freshman. Silva's time was the fifth-fastest by a rookie.

Silva and the Hawks will take this weekend off from competition before splitting up for a pair of races the following weekend. Select Hawks will race the Paul Short Run on Friday, September 29, to be held on Lehigh University's Goodman Campus in Bethlehem, Pa. beginning at 10:15 a.m. Additional Hawks will race the George Mason Invitational on Saturday, September 30, to be hosted by George Mason University at the Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, Va. beginning at 10:00 a.m.; this race will give the Hawks an opportunity to race the course of the upcoming 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship.
