NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Leading the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Ohio State on Sunday, Hawk juniors Paige Bergman and Grace Bendon have been recognized for their performances as they were named Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week and Co-Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, conference officials announced on Monday.
Facing a previously undefeated Ohio State squad that was receiving votes in both collegiate soccer polls and topped No. 20 Notre Dame on Friday, Bergman and Bendon played key roles in the Hawks' 1-0 win over the Buckeyes on Sunday.
For the second straight game, Bergman collected the game-winner off a corner as she drilled a shot from the left wing that bent back and found the back of the net in the 23rd minute. Despite starting all six games in the Hawks' center back, Bergman currently ranks third on the team in goals (two) and points (five).
In goal, Bendon turned in one of the best games of her career against Ohio State as she posted a game-high nine saves, including eight in the second half, to earn her second shutout of the year. Playing every minute of the season to date for SJU, Bendon has posted a 4-1-1 record on the year with a 1.28 goals-against-average and .800 save percentage.
The weekly awards are the first for both Bergman and Bendon this season.
Saint Joseph's caps its four-game road swing this Thursday at Providence at 7 p.m.
