PHILADELPHIA – After leading the Hawks to a 2-1 overtime win over Manhattan last Wednesday evening and a scoreless draw at VMI on Saturday afternoon, sophomore midfielder Matt Mullock has been named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Co-Player of the Week and senior goalkeeper Greg O'Connell has been tabbed the Philadelphia Soccer Six Defensive Player of the Week. The honor, shared with Villanova's Max Kroschwitz, marks the first of Mullock's career, while O'Connell picks up his third career Defensive Player of the Week accolade from the organization.
Mullock's first collegiate goal came as the match-winner in the 94th minute to send SJU to a 2-1 overtime victory over Manhattan on September 6. O'Connell played a part in that play, as the senior goalkeeper blasted a goal kick up the length of the field to a sprinting Mullock, who beat his defender, got the ball at his feet, caught Manhattan goalkeeper Connor Hayes off his line, and put his shot into the back of the net just 3:18 into the first overtime.
In net, O'Connell combined for 10 saves in SJU's 1-0-1 week. In SJU's 2-1 overtime win vs. Manhattan on Wednesday, O'Connell made three saves in the full 93:18 for his second win of the season. O'Connell then went on to make a season-high seven saves in SJU's scoreless draw at VMI, including one save in the first half, two in the second half, two in the first overtime, and two in the second overtime, for his first shutout of the season.
Mullock, O'Connell, and the Hawks are in the midst of a three-match road stretch and return to action at Sacred Heart on Tuesday, September 12. Kickoff at Park Avenue Field in Fairfield, Conn. is slated for 4:00 p.m.
