Phil Martelli, Jr., a 2003 graduate of Saint Joseph's, returns to the University and enters his first season as director of men's basketball program administration in 2017-18.

He joined the Saint Joseph's staff after spending the 2016-17 season as assistant coach with the Delaware 87ers, the affiliate of the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA Developmental League.

Martelli, Jr., brings a wealth of Division I coaching experience to the Hawks, with his most recent position being a five-year stint at the University of Delaware. During his time there, the Blue Hens recorded their most-ever conference wins over five seasons (55) and captured the CAA regular-season and tournament titles in 2013-14, making the school's first NCAA appearance in 15 years.

From 2006 to 2011, Martelli, Jr., was an assistant coach at Niagara University, helping the Purple Eagles to a 95-69 record in his five years, including the 2007 MAAC Tournament title and a victory in the NCAA Tournament.

He also served in the same position at Manhattan College in 2005-06, while beginning his career in 2003 at Central Connecticut State University as the youngest (22) full-time assistant coach in Division I at that time.

Martelli, Jr., who will serve as the Hawks' player and alumni liasion, will be involved with numerous basketball administrative duties including team travel, summer camps and Philadelphia basketball outreach. He will supervise the team's video coordinator, analytics assistant and student managers, while assisting with the Hawks' social media efforts.

Martelli, Jr., was a four-year player for the Hawks and a member of the teams that made NCAA Tournament appearances in 2000-01 and 2002-03. A team co-captain in 2002-03 with Jameer Nelson, he received his bachelor's degree from SJU in marketing.

The oldest son of Hawk head coach Phil Martelli, Martelli, Jr., and his wife Meghan have two children, Philip Stephen and Marra.
