PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph's men's head coach and administrator of cross country and track and field Mike Glavin and women's cross country head coach Melody O'Reilly have announced the identical 2017 fall schedules for both the men's and women's cross country squads. The Hawks will compete at six regular-season meets prior to the start of championship season, followed by the Atlantic 10 Championship (Oct. 28), NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship (Nov. 10), and either the ECAC/IC4A Championship or NCAA Championship (Nov. 18).
For the seventh consecutive year, the Hawks will begin their seasons at The College of New Jersey's Blue/Gold Invitational, where SJU will race the 5k against Rider, city-foe Penn, and host-school TCNJ at Rosedale Park in Hopewell, N.J. on Saturday, September 2. The women's squad returns as the defending champion after claiming back-to-back titles from 2015-16.
Saint Joseph's will return to Rosedale Park to race the Rider Invitational on Friday, September 15; the women will race the 6k, followed by the men in the 8k.
The Hawks will then divide to race at a pair of meets on Friday, September 29 and Saturday, September 30.
On Friday, a group of Hawks will head to the Paul Short Run for both open and championship races, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Lehigh University's Goodman Campus in Bethlehem, Pa., the site of the 2017 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship.
On Saturday, select Hawks will race the George Mason Invitational at the Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, Va., the site of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship. The women's 6k race in slated for 10:00 a.m., followed by the men's 8k race at 10:45 a.m.
SJU will race in a pair of meets on Saturday, October 14 to close out the regular season as the Crimson and Gray head to both the Princeton Invitational, to be held at Princeton University's West Windsor Fields, and Lafayette Leopard Invitational, to be held at Lafayette College's Metzgar Fields.
For the first time in league history, the Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, Va. will serve as the site of the A-10 Championship. The meet (5k, 8k) is set for Saturday, October 28.
The men's squad placed fifth in a field of 14 at last year's A-10 meet. The Hawks have finished in the league's top three six times in the last eight years, including five consecutive times from 2011-15. Saint Joseph's returns three of its five scorers from last year's meet, including graduate student Dan Savage (17th), rising sophomore Josh Clark (23rd), who was tabbed the A-10's Most Outstanding Rookie Performer, and rising senior David Dorsey (29th) while graduating scorers Jimmy Daniels (24th) and John Mascioli (37th).
Saint Joseph's women's squad turned in a seventh-place finish and returns four of five scorers from last year's squad in rising junior Lindsey Oremus (11th, A-10 All-Conference), rising senior Cassidy Weimer (12th, A-10 All-Conference), rising sophomore Meridith Twomey (66th), and rising senior Caroline Keegan (80th) while graduating Sarah Regnault (20th).
The NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship is scheduled for Friday, November 10 at Lehigh University's Goodman Campus. Last season, the men placed 9th overall in the 10k race while the women took 16th in the 6k. The top two teams earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
The IC4A and ECAC Championships will be held on November 18 at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. The men's squad earned the runner-up team finish for the second year in a row last fall while the women's side finished fourth.
The NCAA Championship will also be held on November 18, at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky.
