A total of six Saint Joseph's student-athletes from the men's rowing team have been named to the 2016-17 All-Academic Team by the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Board of Stewards. Garren Best, Caroline Bird, Jack Darling, Eric Jones, Thomson Rymer and Joe Sullivan have received the honors for the first time in their careers.
To be eligible for recognition a student-athlete must have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.35 or higher, completed one full year at their institution, be an institutional letterwinner and also competed at the 2017 IRA National Championship Regatta.
Best, Bird, Darling and Rymer were all members of the Hawks' Varsity 8 that competed at the IRA Championships, while Jones and Sullivan competed for the Second Varsity 8.
Best, Bird and Rymer rowed for SJU's Varsity 8 that placed second in the Dad Vail Regatta, scoring its best finish since the 1999 crew also earned a silver medal.
Darling, Jones and Sullivan rowed for the Second Varsity 8 that captured a gold medal at the Dad Vail Regatta, for SJU's first medal since 2005.
Bird is a senior, who received her degree in food marketing in May. Best (food marketing major), Jones (accounting major) and Rymer (biology major) each just completed their junior years at SJU. Darling (finance major) and Sullivan (finance) have finished their sophomore years.
In all, 336 student-athletes from 32 member institutions were recognized by the IRA.
