PHILADELPHIA – Leading by one goal coming out of the halftime break, the Blue Devils outscored the Hawks 9-4 in the second half as the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse squad fell to #19/16 Duke, 16-10, on Sweeney Field on Thursday afternoon. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 2-4 while the Blue Devils snap a three-game losing streak to improve to 5-3.
Senior midfielder Maggie Egan opened the second half with an equalizer to even up the score, 7-7, at the 25:28 mark, but Duke responded with four consecutive goals over a 7:25 span (21:39, 20:05, 19:56, 14:14) to earn a three-goal lead, its biggest of the game at that point.
Lane put away back-to-back goals within 26 seconds of one another (13:25, 12:59) to bring the Hawks back to within two, but the Blue Devils used another four-goal run (9:25, 5:03, 2:15, 1:57) to extend their advantage by six, 15-9.
Junior midfielder Aly Gormley put away her first score of the season to close the Hawks' deficit to five with 1:18 to play, but Duke's Kitty Morrissey gave the Blue Devils their 16th of the day with 28 ticks left on the scoreboard.
For the game, the Blue Devils owned a 39-18 advantage in shots, including a second half where they took 18 total and landed nine for goals. Duke also held edges in ground balls (19-17) and draw controls (17-10).
Junior defender Kristen Kelbon recorded a single-game career high four ground balls and added two caused turnovers while sophomore midfielder Hayley Sabol added three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
SJU opened the game on a four-goal run with goals from freshman attacker Hope Anhut (27:00), McCallion (21:12, 17:53), and freshman midfielder Julia Pash (16:12). McCallion's second goal at the 17:53 mark brought her to 100 for her career.
However, the Blue Devils scored seven of the game's next eight goals to go ahead, 7-5, with 1:40 before the halftime break.
Lane scored on a feed from Anhut with just eight seconds on the clock to bring the Hawks to within one after the first 30:00.
Senior goalkeeper Amelia Deibler (1-3) made 10 saves - five in each half - in the full 60:00.
Saint Joseph's returns to action this Sunday, March 19 at Mount Saint Mary's. Start time at Waldron Family Stadium in Emmitsburg, Md. is slated for 1:00 p.m.
