Release:  03/16/2017

The Saint Joseph’s women’s rowing team will begin the Spring season on Saturday, March 18 when the Hawks host Penn and Delaware on the Schuylkill River. Racing begins at 10 a.m.

SJU enters the season with a relatively young squad, with only three seniors but 19 freshmen. Among the Hawks’ leading returnees are the team co-captains, junior Maria Biancaniello and senior Katherine Robb. ROSTER

The Hawks are coming off solid finishes from the Fall season at the Navy Day Regatta, Head of the Schuylkill, the Small Boat Regatta and the Frostbite Regatta.

“In 2017 we have rededicated ourselves to training more for rhythm and flow and less for ego, and have seen huge progress across the board.  We have returned to a more aggressive, punchy stroke that has the team very eager to get to racing,” said head coach Gerry Quinlan, now in his 18th season with the Hawks.

Saint Joseph’s will again face a top-notch schedule which includes annual trips to the GW Invitational in Washington, D.C. on April 7-8, and to the San Diego Crew Classic on March 31-April 1. SCHEDULE

A major addition to the schedule this year will be a trip to the prestigious Women’s Henley Royal Regatta in England on June 16-18. It will mark the Hawks’ third trip to Henley and their first since 2010.

The Hawks will stay local and race on their home course, the Schuylkill River, on March 25 with the Murphy Cup and the Bergen/Kelly Cup on April 22.

SJU will be looking for a strong showing in the Atlantic 10 Championships, which returns to Cooper River in New Jersey on May 6. “We had a blip at A-10s in 2016, but we know we will be back with a vengeance this year,” said Quinlan.

As always, the Hawks will culminate the Spring at the Dad Vail Regatta, the nation’s largest collegiate regatta, which runs on May 12-13 on the Schuylkill River.
